Detailed Specifications, Models and Applications of THHN Wire
2025-08-25 00:40:13

I. Specifications and Models

THHN Wire is a commonly used Electrical Conductor in North America, with detailed classifications of specifications and models closely related to electrical performance and application scenarios, as follows:

  1. Conductor Type
    • Solid Conductor: A single Copper Wire with high hardness, suitable for fixed wiring (e.g., in-wall conduit).

    • Stranded Conductor: Composed of multiple fine copper wires twisted together, with better Flexibility, easy to bend and move, often used for internal connections of equipment.

    • Copper Conductor: Most THHN wires use high-purity electrolytic copper, divided into Solid Conductor and Stranded Conductor.

    • Aluminum Conductor: Less common, mainly used for low-cost, long-span wiring (e.g., auxiliary outdoor Overhead Lines), but attention should be paid to aluminum oxidation, usually with anti-oxidation treatment.

  2. Wire Gauge (AWG)
Following the American Wire Gauge (AWG) standard, the wire diameter covers various specifications from fine to thick, commonly used in construction and industrial scenarios:
    • Small gauge (14-10 AWG): 14 AWG (current capacity ~15A), 12 AWG (~20A), 10 AWG (~30A), used for residential lighting, ordinary sockets and other low-power circuits.

    • Medium gauge (8-4 AWG): 8 AWG (~40A), 6 AWG (~55A), 4 AWG (~70A), suitable for high-power appliances such as air conditioners and electric water heaters.

    • Large gauge (2 AWG and above): 2 AWG (~95A), 1 AWG (~110A), 1/0 AWG (~125A) and larger (e.g., 4/0 AWG, ~230A), used for main circuits, industrial equipment power connections, etc.
Note: The smaller the AWG number, the thicker the wire diameter and the larger the current capacity. Specific current capacity should refer to electrical codes (e.g., NEC) based on installation environment (e.g., temperature, number of conduits).

  3. Insulation and Jacket
    • Insulation Layer: The inner layer is thermoplastic PVC or cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), with a temperature rating of 90°C (dry environment), providing good electrical insulation.

    • Jacket Layer: The outer layer is wrapped with a Nylon Jacket, enhancing oil resistance, wear resistance, and chemical corrosion resistance, which can protect the inner insulation from mechanical damage.

    • Color Identification: The insulation color distinguishes wire functions, such as black (phase line), white/gray (neutral line), green/green-yellow (ground line), complying with safety standards.

  4. Certification Standards
It must comply with Underwriters Laboratories (UL) standards (e.g., UL 83) and the National Electrical Code (NEC), with markings usually including "THHN" and "UL Listed" to ensure safety and compliance.

II. Uses

The characteristics of THHN wire make it suitable for various electrical scenarios, with specific applications as follows:

    • Residential Buildings: Used for indoor lighting circuits, wall sockets, and branch circuits of small appliances (e.g., refrigerators, TVs), with 14-12 AWG specifications being the most common.

    • Commercial and Industrial Buildings: Power distribution systems in shopping malls, office buildings, and factories. Medium to large gauges (e.g., 8-4/0 AWG) are used to connect air conditioning units, water pumps, and other equipment.

  1. Conduit and Enclosed Wiring
Due to the wear resistance of the nylon jacket, it is often laid in metal conduits (e.g., EMT, PVC pipes) or trunking, suitable for concealed wiring in walls, ceilings, underground, etc., complying with NEC requirements for enclosed space wiring.
  2. Internal Wiring of Electrical Equipment
    • Industrial Equipment: Internal wire connections for motors, transformers, control cabinets, and distribution boxes. Stranded Thhn Wire is suitable for complex wiring inside equipment due to its flexibility.

    • Electrical Manufacturing: Used for internal circuits of home appliances such as washing machines and dryers. The nylon jacket can resist oil and vibration during equipment operation.

  3. Dry Environment Use
It is only suitable for dry indoor environments because the insulation layer's temperature resistance decreases in humid environments. It cannot be used outdoors, in underground humid areas, or underwater; waterproof wires (e.g., THWN-2) should be selected for such scenarios.
  4. Temporary and Emergency Wiring
In construction sites and temporary events, it can be used as a temporary power connection line (with protective measures), but it should avoid long-term exposure to harsh environments.
